Public Health Advises Residents to Contact Medical Providers and PHSS

Thurston County Public Health and Social Services (PHSS) has confirmed the first rabies-positive bat of the year in Thurston County. The bat was discovered on Thursday, August 1, 2024, and PHSS is advising residents to contact their medical providers and the department if they have had any contact with bats or other wild animals.

Anyone who has been bitten or scratched by a bat or has otherwise come into contact with a bat should contact their medical provider immediately. They should also call PHSS during business hours at 360-867-2667. The department can provide guidance on rabies testing and treatment.

PHSS urges residents to take steps to avoid contact with bats and other wild animals. These steps include:

  • Never approach or handle bats or other wild animals.
  • Vaccinate pets against rabies.
  • Keep pets indoors at night.
  • Cover chimneys and other openings in your home to prevent bats from entering.
  • Report any bats or other wild animals that are acting strangely to PHSS at 360-867-2667.
