In an unprecedented display of batting firepower, Punjab Kings (PBKS) rewrote the history books of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a record-breaking chase on Thursday night. Facing a daunting target of 280 runs set by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), PBKS batters went into overdrive, smashing boundaries and clearing fences with ease.
Punjab's captain, Sam Curran, won the toss and surprisingly elected to bowl first, hoping to take advantage of any moisture in the pitch. However, KKR openers Sunil Narine and Phil Salt had other plans, putting on a blistering 124-run partnership to give their team a solid foundation. Despite the loss of Narine (46), Salt continued to punish the PBKS bowlers, amassing an impressive 80 runs before falling.
Undeterred by the imposing target, Punjab openers Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow came out swinging. Dhawan set the tone with a flurry of boundaries, while Bairstow played a more circumspect role. The duo put on a 123-run stand before Dhawan departed for 62. Bairstow continued his onslaught, reaching his half-century and eventually finishing on an unbeaten 122.
The middle order of PBKS also contributed valuable runs, with Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma chipping in with quickfire cameos. In the end, Punjab reached the target with two balls to spare, completing a remarkable turnaround and setting a new benchmark for run chases in IPL history.
